Why I Came Back to Making Cute Digital Art

I’m an illustrator and designer from Ukraine, and drawing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

When I was a child, I was always making something. My mom kept many of my drawings, and I really hope I can find them one day and share a few here. I would love to see whether any of the colors, characters or tiny details in my current work were already hiding somewhere in those childhood pages.

Later, I studied design at a theatre and art college. One of my semester projects was a little book filled with cute animal illustrations. Looking back, it feels like a very early version of the work I’m creating now.

Learning the rules first

My education included a lot of academic drawing and painting. We learned proportions, composition, color and how to create work in a technically correct way.

That training gave me a strong foundation, but it also meant spending years making art according to specific rules and assignments. There was often a clear idea of how something was supposed to look, with less room to follow my own preferences.

Perhaps that is why I now enjoy playful illustration so much. I love bright and pastel colors, expressive characters, bold outlines and the kind of cheerful details that make an image feel instantly uplifting.

Finding my way back

For a long time, I experimented with different creative directions. I worked in design, created digital stickers and planners, tried new styles and sometimes stepped away from illustration altogether.

After a break, I started drawing again. This time, I noticed that I was naturally returning to the same things I had always loved: cute animals, funny phrases, happy colors and simple shapes.

My current style didn’t appear in one perfect moment. It developed slowly through years of learning, trying, stopping and beginning again. But now it finally feels familiar. It feels like something I chose for myself.

Why Cute Art Matters to Me

I live in Ukraine, in a country where the war is part of everyday life. It is a difficult reality to carry, even on days when life seems relatively normal.

Creating cute, colorful art gives me a small space where everything feels safe and calm for a while. Bright colors, cozy characters and playful little details genuinely lift my mood. Drawing them helps me focus on something warm, comforting and full of life.

And maybe someone else will find a little joy in them too. Perhaps a funny ghost on a T-shirt, a cheerful animal sticker or a colorful print will make an ordinary day feel slightly brighter. Knowing that something I created might bring comfort or a smile to another person makes this work especially meaningful to me.

This is the little world I create for myself when real life feels too heavy, and I’m happy to share it with anyone who might need it too.
